2023 Ford F-150 Lightning

A grey 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum is angled left.

Pushing boundaries is what the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning is all about. It’s as unique as lightning in a bottle and brings with it a lot of great features and functionality that you just won’t find on any common truck powered by an internal combustion engine. The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning is the second model year outing for the highly popular new nameplate that has joined the F-150 stable under the Ford brand. The newest model year brings with it the same level of high-quality design and high-end feature set that has made the F-150 such a standout in the truck segment.

The 2023 model year F-150 Lightning doesn’t make any major content changes compared to the 2022 model year, but it does offer a performance upgrade over the original model year outing. For the 2023 model year models, they now roll off the assembly line with just an extra bit of range compared to the outgoing models. Ford has given the standard range 98 kWh dual motor battery pack a slight upgrade. The 2023 F-150 Lightning now has an EPA estimated total range of 240 miles on a full charge compared to the 2022 model’s estimated 230-mile total range. That gives you a 4% additional range on the outgoing model year, which is great for those who want the best possible performance out of the all-electric F-150 when it comes to total range.

The F-150 Lightning is available across multiple trim formats. It also has a palette of striking colors designed to delight the eyes and capture the attention of onlookers. You can get the F-150 Lightning in four distinct trim formats with different features and levels of technology available, starting with the entry-level Pro trim, which is followed by the XLT, the feature-rich LARIAT, and finally the high-end Platinum. You also have up to ten colors to choose from, starting with Agate Black, AntiMatter Blue, Avalanche, Azure Gray, Carbonized Gray, Iconic Silver, Oxford White, Rapid Red, Star White, and Stone Gray.

Utility

A white 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning is shown towing an Airstream trailer.

The 2023 F-150 Lightning is powered by dual electric motors that can be paired up with two different battery packs. There is the standard range 98 kWh battery that produces 452 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque, with a maximum range of 240 miles on a full charge. Alternatively, there is the 131 kWh extended-range battery pack that delivers 580 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque that has a maximum range of 320 miles on a full charge.

Towing and Hauling Capabilities

The battery packs give you a lot of utility alone, especially thanks to their power output, which enables the F-150 Lightning to tow up to 7,700 lbs with the standard range battery pack and tow up to 10,000 lbs with the extended range battery pack. The standard-range battery pack also has a maximum payload of 2,235 lbs, while the extended-range battery pack has a max payload capacity of 1,952 lbs, so you can still get a lot of your work done with the F-150 Lightning, just like you would with the standard F-150.

Charging Options

You can also charge the battery packs in multiple ways; the F-150 Lightning comes with a standard charging cable compatible with 120-volt outlets and 240-volt outlets, such as Level 2 charging stations that you can have installed in your home, or that you can use at a public recharge outlet. Alternatively, you can recharge the Lightning using a Level 3 DC Fast Charge station to quickly recharge the battery pack in minutes, letting you get back on the road as quickly as possible. And with the built-in regenerative braking, it helps you get as much range out of the Lightning as possible, especially during stop-and-go and traffic.

Cargo Volume

You can use the Lightning for all manner of tasks thanks to its diverse line-up of utilitarian functionality, such as the embedded front tow hooks, as well as the extra storage capacity provided both in the rear cargo bed and the frunk. You have up to 52.8 cu.ft. of cargo volume to use in the 5.6-ft bed. The frunk provides you with an additional 14.1 cu.ft. of cargo space to make use of.

Trailering Features and the Pro Power Onboard

There is also the availability of an onboard scale with smart hitch removal, so you can easily know how much weight you’re carrying, and easily hook up and disconnect a trailer using the available Smart Hitch and Pro Trailer Backup Assist technology. Additionally, there is the Pro Power Onboard functionality with standard output of 2.4 kWh of power and an optional 9.6 kWh option for those who need to use their Lightning as a mobile power generator.

Design

The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning has a completely different design from the standard F-150 powered by the internal combustion engine and its hybrid alternatives. A fascia-wrapped set of LED signature lamps that make up the headlight array also includes signature hood lighting that gives the Lightning a unique look. There is also the solid grille and blue oval Ford logo in the center that make the truck stand out. Matching LED tail lamps and signature tailgate lighting keep the trend going of providing the F-150 with a lot of illumination, including LED bed-box lighting.

Wheel Options

All new wheel designs also have a distinct look that you won’t find on the standard F-150. Each trim comes with its own set of unique wheel designs that range from 18 inches up to 22 inches in size. These designs give the F-150 Lightning a futuristic look, with the machined alloy designs with inner-space pockets to give each of the wheels their own personality to match the truck. You can also have the F-150 Lightning paired with either all-season or all-terrain tires.

Exterior Enhancements

You have a fixed glass rear window with tinted privacy glass, so you can easily see out but potentially onlookers can’t see in. There is also the availability of a moonroof for those who want the additional luxury element of looking out through the above opening during travels. The power adjustable and manual folding side mirrors with available heating and integrated turn signals also add a nice flair to the truck. The design of the F-150 Lightning is also accentuated by its lightweight, high-strength, fully boxed steel frame. This gives you a sturdy foundation on the road and is designed to handle well whether you’re doing daily errands or cargo hauls.

Performance

The four-wheel drivetrain is designed to provide as much stability as possible, thanks to its independent rear suspension with the standard inclusion of a rear e-locking axle and the AdvanceTrac stability management and traction control system. These features are complimented with the built-in One Pedal Driving Mode for crawling and off-road traversal. The control and stability of the truck can also be modified thanks to the drive modes, featuring Normal, Sport, Tow/Haul, and Off-Road.

Convenience

The tech powering the 2023 Lightning is complimented by the interior comfort features that accommodate up to five passengers. This includes standard front heated seats with available front power driver and front passenger seats with lumbar support. Available Active Motion seats with premium Nirvana leather surfaces can also spruce up the comfort levels within the cabin, while the black urethane or leather steering wheel options can ensure you have a firm grip on the wheel at all times.

Interior Features

Interior ambient lights help keep the cabin illuminated, especially during night driving. Available power adjustable pedals with memory settings, push-button start, and dual-zone automatic climate control make accessing and utilizing the F-150 Lightning seamless and convenient. Combined with additional features like an interior work surface, a wireless charging pad, and available universal garage opener means you have more opportunities to get more done without getting in and out of the vehicle, whether that’s parking the vehicle in the garage or getting a bit of extra work done before you call it a day. The F-150 Lightning is all about maximizing your space and your time.

The Ford Co-Pilot360 Suite

Some of the best ways that the F-150 utilizes modern-day technologies to make your life more convenient is with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite of driver aids and assists, such as the 360-degree camera and the forward and reverse sensing systems with Active Park Assist 2.0 to help you squeeze into just about any appropriately sized parking space. With additional features like Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, a Lane-Keeping System, Evasive Steering Assist, and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, you can rest assured that the F-150 Lightning aims to keep you safe and on the road at all times.

Connectivity

To top it all off is the Ford SYNC 4A enhanced infotainment suite with voice recognition and a 15.5-inch HD touchscreen. This includes wireless connectivity for features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as FordPass functionality for 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity for up to 10 wireless devices. And if that’s not enough, you have the FordPass Connected suite for built-in navigation, so you can easily find local charge stations or your favorite restaurant tucked away between side streets and high-rises. Even better yet is the ability to take advantage of the hands-free, semi-autonomous BlueCruise driving system, giving you access to 130,000 miles of compatible roads across North America.
