2023 Ford Explorer

A grey 2023 Ford Explorer XLT is shown angled left.

One of the great things about shopping for a vehicle these days is that you have a ton of options available to you, even within a single lineup, like the great selection of SUVs available from Ford. If you are interested in something for a growing family, then the three-row design and fantastic performance of the 2023 Ford Explorer make it an amazing choice that you will enjoy driving. You have a ton of freedom to get everything you need with the Explorer since it offers you three engines, eight trims, and plenty of options inside and out.

There are plenty of three-row SUVs on the road these days, but few can come close to giving you the kind of power that the Explorer has. You have three different engines available on the 2023 Explorer, starting with an impressive 2.3L EcoBoost that delivers 300 hp and comes paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. If you want greater performance, you can get a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 that delivers 400 hp or an incredibly efficient 3.3L hybrid V6 with 318 hp and amazing fuel economy. These two engine options also come with 10-speed transmissions. While rear-wheel drive is standard on the Explorer, four-wheel drive is available.

Inside, you will find three rows of seating, giving you room for up to seven passengers. Not only do you have plenty of space for friends and family, but with more than 18 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and nearly 88 cu.ft. of total cargo volume behind the front seats, the Explorer is easy to load up with everything you need before you hit the road. This interior is beautifully appointed with great features like standard tri-zone automatic temperature control, a 10.1-inch infotainment display, and an available Bang & Olufsen sound system. The Explorer is also an incredibly safe ride with standard technology that includes Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, a Lane-Keeping System, and much more.

Engine & Performance

A Rewarding Driving Experience

There is no shortage of three-row SUVs on the market these days, but the majority are powered by mild, unimaginative engines. Too many manufacturers seem to think that choosing an SUV means giving up the right to a fun and rewarding driving experience––fortunately, Ford is not one of them. The 2023 Ford Explorer has three different engines available, and you get a surprisingly sporty and enjoyable drive with any of them. Each of these engines also brings a remarkable amount of muscle to the road, giving you excellent towing capability to take advantage of.

The standard engine in the 2023 Explorer is a 2.3L turbocharged EcoBoost I-4 that delivers 300 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. This is an excellent starting engine, but if you want more power, there is an available 3.0L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine that delivers 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. You can only get this more-powerful option on certain trims, so keep that in mind when shopping for an Explorer, but the raw power and robust performance it brings to the road are undeniable. If efficiency is more important to you, there is also an available 3.3L hybrid V6 engine that delivers 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque with fantastic fuel economy.

All three of these engines give you impressive towing capability, though there are some differences between them. The standard 2.3L engine can handle up to 5,300 lbs of towing, while the available 3.0L engine can boost that up to 5,600 lbs of towing capacity––though with either engine, you may need the optional Class III Trailer Tow Package to achieve these numbers. The available 3.3L hybrid can handle up to 5,000 lbs of towing with the Class III Trailer Tow Package, so consider these differences while looking at your Ford Explorer options and choosing the right model.

Interior & Features

Customize Your SUV

One of the most important things to keep in mind while shopping for your next SUV is that you will spend the majority of your time with your vehicle inside of it. That is why looking at interior features and size is so important, so you get a model that will perfectly meet your needs. Inside the 2023 Ford Explorer, you will find three rows of seating. Most trims feature a second-row bench with seating for up to seven passengers as the standard option, though nearly all trims are available with second-row captain’s chairs to give you six-passenger seating. Your passengers will have plenty of room to stretch out, plus you get 18.2 cu.ft. of rear cargo space behind the third row, 47.9 cu.ft. of cargo volume behind the second row of seats, and up to 87.8 cu.ft. of total cargo space behind the front row.

The features you will find inside the 2023 Ford Explorer depend greatly upon the trim level you choose, but even the standard features are excellent. With the starting trim, you get tri-zone automatic temperature control, a steering wheel with mounted controls, and cloth seating with an eight-way power driver’s seat. The interior of the standard trim also features a 4.2-inch color productivity screen in the instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and a six-speaker sound system. You also get a manually-adjustable day/night rearview mirror, integrated key fob, and a power liftgate in the rear, all standard.

Looking at the highest trim of the 2023 Explorer, the Platinum, you will find a number of upgrades throughout the inside. For example, the Platinum has illuminated front scuff plates, Intelligent Access with Push-Button Start, and multi-color ambient lighting for a relaxing and welcoming interior. You get a wireless charging pad with the Platinum, a 12.3-inch Digital Productivity Screen for the driver, and a B&O 12-speaker sound system––a 14-speaker sound system is available. The Platinum has leather seating surfaces with Tri-Diamond Perforated inserts, a 10-way power driver’s seat, and heated seating in the first and second rows.

Driver-Assist Technology

Standard Co-Pilot360

When shopping for a vehicle, nothing else is as important as how well the SUV you want can help protect you and your loved ones. The 2023 Ford Explorer comes with Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology that ensures every trim is designed to keep you and others safe on the road. This includes an impressive number of standard driver-assist features that come with every model, along with a number of available options if you want to take things even further.

The standard Explorer comes with a Pre-Collision Assist system that can detect a potential crash with vehicles and pedestrians and alert you to the imminent risk. This system also includes Automatic Emergency Braking that can activate if you do not take corrective action or support you with additional braking power when avoiding a potential crash. You also get a Lane-Keeping System that scans your vehicle’s position between clearly-marked lane lines on the road and alerts you if you seem to be drifting. If you drift repeatedly, it will remind you that it may be time to pull over and take a break.

Along with these features, every 2023 Explorer comes with Auto High-Beam Headlamps that activate when poor lighting is detected and dim automatically when the Explorer senses oncoming traffic to avoid blinding other drivers. You also get Rear Parking Sensors that can detect objects behind your vehicle and alert you when you get too close to them while in reverse. Available driver-assist features include Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control, which lets you set a speed that the Explorer will maintain while also keeping a safe distance between you and other vehicles, plus a 360-Degree Camera system for improved visibility around your vehicle and even Active Park Assist 2.0, which lets your SUV park itself in safe conditions.
